The word “Ostara” comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess name “Eostre.” If you watched/read AMERICAN GODS, Ostara is probably familiar to you, but there is scant evidence for Ostara as an actual goddess.

Regardless of whether or not Ostara was ever specifically worshipped as a deity, celebrations continue today as Easter, which was the original name for the spring Equinox. As such, many Germanic Easter customs honoring fertility still dominate today, like painting eggs and all those randy rabbits.

Like many spring celebrations, Ostara is about fertility, rebirth, and renewal. This time of year marked the beginning of the agricultural cycle, when planting begins. So sow the seeds you’d like to harvest.
